Tolkein fan? Kidlit fan? Just a fan of awesome bars? If you ever find yourself in steamy Manila in the Phillippines desperate for a cold beer, do not miss The Hobbit House - home of ‘the smallest waiters in the world.’
Yes, it’s a hobbit-themed bar staffed entirely by Little People (before you shout at me, this is apparently the PC term, even though it makes me think of leprechauns).
It really is like stepping into Bilbo Baggins’ home, complete with tree roots in the ceiling. Not to mention live music every night and the friendliest bar staff I’ve ever encountered.
Some people I mentioned it to were horrified at what they saw as exploitation - but it’s both owned and run by Little People, so I don’t see anything wrong with their using their imagination in such a fantastic way. Whether you’re a Tolkein buff or just looking for somewhere unusual to have a pint, The Hobbit House is easily the most fun bar in Manila. And not an Orc in sight.

I've always felt Little People sounded worse than the alternatives. Wild pub.

If you're ever in Houston, you should check out the Hobbit cafe (http://www.myhobbitcafe.com/). The burgers are ok and the decor is awesome.
ReplyDeleteWow, you've really traveled a bunch haven't you?! And been to some really interesting places :-) I enjoy reading about these very unusual places...
ReplyDeleteI'm sold -- it looks great! Those guys must be sick of bad LOTR jokes though. Out of respect, I'm going to refrain from making any in this comment.
